What is the PharyngOroFacial System (POFS) ?

PharyngOroFacial System (POFS) is the anatomical environment shown below in a Galileos CBCT image.  It encompasses nasopharynx, oral cavity, facial and base of skull structures, cervical vertebrate and hyoid bone. Its physiological interaction is crucial for the life sustaining functions such as breathing, chewing, swallowing and speech.

Pharyngorofacial disorders (POFD) represents a large group of disorders including masticatory and sleep breathing disorders involving the structural and functional stability of POF system impacting the growth and development of related components. The site and source of possible primary pain, dysfunction and structural damage is located in the POF system.

Teledontics is the science and technologies for diagnosis, prevention, management and treatment of OSA and TMD by means of expansion,  restoration and maintenance of POF system utilizing Dentsply Sirona diagnostic and instrumentation tools.

Teledontic treatment is based on the integration of the following concepts; “patient centered care, total wellness, practical, personal and profitable”. Patient-centered care which involves transforming the relationship between medical and dental providers and patients from the traditional model, in which a care provider prescribes the same treatment for most patients with similar diagnoses or conditions, into a patient-provider partnership that considers treatment options based on a patient’s unique concerns, preferences, values and systemic needs. The teledontic model promises each patient a primary care provider, medical or dental, leading an interdisciplinary care team, with the intent of delivering seamless care across services and settings, keeping the patient at the center.
